My name is Andy Hayes and I’m an Edinburgh expert, professional travel writer and photographer.
Ten reasons why I love Edinburgh so much:
- Shortbread really is that good, especially in a hot cup of tea. (And the best brands aren’t the most expensive.)
- Edinburgh is one of the best cities where urban and nature blend effortlessly. You can be in the middle of a quiet forest, and a 30 minute walk later be in a bustling city pub.
- You can’t go wrong with comfort food like baked potatoes for a steaming hot plate of fish and chips – and Edinburgh’s got some of the best venues.
- Edinburgh is world-renowned for festivals – the Fringe, Hogmanay, the International Film Festival; you don’t have to be an Edinburgh expert to know that.
- The city’s architecture is some of the most beautiful and extensive examples of Georgian facades in the world.
- Fresh air. Hike up Arthur’s Seat or any of the other 7 hills of Edinburgh, and take a deep breath.
- If you like ghosts, Edinburgh has those too. From spooky buildings to creepy graveyards, you can hang out with the dead in the city.
- The city is dripping with café culture, and has several artisan shops that serve very good coffee.
- From the centuries of battles that happened here, there are the scars. Every nook and cranny, every stone and steeple has a story.
- It’s a place that feels like home – even if you aren’t from Edinburgh.
