Things To Do in Edinburgh

.

If you’re looking for things to do in Edinburgh, you are in luck. One of the nice aspects the capital city is that it does have such a broad range of things to do.  In Edinburgh, for example, you can spend the morning on a walk on the city outskirts soaking up nature, then hit the shopping malls in the afternoon.

There is often a misconception that it always rains here, which isn’t exactly true – it rarely rains an entire day, more like a sprinkle than a downpour.  Though this might affect the best types of things to do in Edinburgh for you, it’s usually only a passing consideration; a nice pair of water-resistant shoes and an umbrella should do you wonders!

Keep in mind, too, that Edinburgh is pretty small and you can nearly walk everywhere – heck, you can even walk down to Leith to the Royal Yacht Britannia.  It’s a couple of miles and an interesting walk, for sure.  But the city has a very good public transport system, so your things to do in Edinburgh are not limited by where your hotel/accommodation is.

Free is Your Friend

Let’s face it:  The UK is an expensive country to visit (or to live in!).  It’s no wonder everyone wants to find the free things to do in Edinburgh, to give their budget a little bit of relief.  But that’s one great thing about the capital city – there are lots and lots of options for free (no, not just inexpensive but free) attractions in the city.

Top Tips

Here are a few simple, easy ways to find free things to do in Edinburgh:

  • Go for a walk.  The outdoors in Edinburgh can be beautiful, rain or shine, day or night.  There are several parks in the city – the Meadows, Holyrood Park, Inverleith Park – where you can stretch your feet and get some fresh air.
  • Go to a museum.  Most museums in the UK are free!  The National Museum of Scotland, the Writer’s Museum, and the Fruitmarket Gallery are a few of the free choices. (Edinburgh Castle, sadly, is not free.)
  • Catch some live music.  Apart from buying a drink (but you were buying one anyway, right?), you can enjoy free live music nearly every night of the week in the city.  When you arrive, grab a free newspaper like the Skinny available everywhere to find out what’s on.
