Top Tips
A few of the must-do experiences when it gets dark in the city include:
- A night tour of one of the graveyards – the Greyfrairs Kirkyard is the best, and incidentally it is the most haunted place in town.
- If it’s a weekend, one of the usual things to do in Edinburgh at Night is to head out for some drinks. The two late-night areas are the Cowgate (lots of nightclubs in unique venues) and George Street (for the champagne and cocktail crowd).
- Go underground with a tour of one of the vaults; while you can do a tour during the day (it’s always dark down here, if you hadn’t guessed) but at night it’s more fun.
- Take some pictures of the city, you need your own shot to rival all those postcards, right? Edinburgh castle looks great from Princes Street, or head up Calton Hill for a great view in all directions.

Safety Tips
While the city is a safe place relatively speaking, it’s still wise to know what you’re getting yourself into with the things to do in Edinburgh at night. The biggest problem you’ll likely have is a bit of rowdy drunk behaviour – there isn’t a lot of gun crime here. The easiest way to stay safe is to keep your wits about you and don’t contribute to the problem yourself; as they say, everything in moderation!
